About Us
At Upright Nigeria Foundation
Charity is the lifeline of humanity, embodying the spirit of generosity and compassion that unites us in our quest to uplift those in need.
Charitable actions can take many forms, including donating funds to organizations, volunteering at local shelters, providing food or clothing to those in need, or simply showing kindness and compassion to others in difficult circumstances. Dedicated to specific causes or populations, many charitable organizations and non-profits rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations, and governments to support their work.
Charity fosters community, empathy, and social responsibility, addressing social issues, supporting those in need, and building a compassionate and equitable society.
A testament to my genuine desire to provide sincere aid, driven by the immense passion in my heart. I, Ahmed Rufa’i Khalil captured significant instances that led to the evolution of the Upright Nigeria Foundation, as a corporate organization. Upright Nigeria Foundation is a child of necessity. In my youth, this quest began. I offered what little I had to my local community as a temporary platform for many Nigerians, to connect with the less fortunate and feel a sense of belonging.
My Story
Under the scorching Nigerian sun in the unrelenting heat of 1982, I drew near to St. Mary Hospital in Okpoga. A massive crowd overflowed the entrance, their countenances etched with both anxiety and determination. Amidst the clamor, a voice that stirred my memory hailed me from the throng. A familiar voice called out to me from the crowd. I recognized my father’s friend. He asked if I was traveling back to Lagos, knowing about my recent arrival. I nodded, and then he explained that he had been arrested for not paying his annual income tax. He didn’t have the money to pay and the authorities threatened to impound his bicycle. I found out that thirty people owed N1.00 (One Naira) each for the year. I paid the money they owed with great difficulty, as I only had N170. A minimal surplus of N10.00 was left inside my pocket after the tax collector’s fee. Despite the unexpected expense, I felt a profound sense of fulfillment and obligation, I knew it was my duty to lead this journey of charity and fulfillment with unwavering confidence.
The incident sparked a deep commitment within me to charitable work. I poured my resources into helping others, freely giving away money, food, clothes, shoes, and shelter. I was always there to support Mallam Ibrahim, a friend with eight children, by providing food and other essentials. Here is a memorable story about Dominic, a young graduate in Lagos who secured a job in 1997 after completing his mandatory national service. He approached me to borrow a shirt, tie, and a pair of shoes that he could use at the office for a month before purchasing his own. These material possessions were happily and amicably shared.
All of these humorous and heartfelt situations assembled, blended, and compacted the true meaning of life for me as a young Nigerian.
Incorporating Passion: Zainab's Story
To exemplify my decision to integrate my passion into a legal organization, let’s delve into the specific instance of Zainab Jibril in 2020. She had recently graduated from the Kongo Campus of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. She is a lively young girl who resides with her parents in Tudun Wada, Zaria. She had a friendly and cheerful demeanor. However, her life took an unexpected turn when she started experiencing excruciating joint pain, particularly in her legs, which made it increasingly difficult for her to move. Zainab’s parents took her to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Shika, Zaria. Zainab was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. This condition caused her red blood cells to become rigid and crescent-shaped, leading to pain and tissue damage.
Zainab’s parents sought out the expertise of orthopedic specialists. After a thorough examination, the surgeons recommended hip replacement surgery to alleviate the damage caused by sickle cell anemia and allow Zainab to walk again. With hope in their hearts, Zainab’s family agreed to the surgery proposal. However, the cost implication of her surgery was prohibitive. Unable to bear the expense, they reached out to me, and I covered all the expenses, totaling approximately N1.5m.
Zainab emerged from the surgery with a strengthened hip, thanks to a titanium implant that would help her as she relearned to walk.
Inspired by Zainab. Empowered by the ingenuity, determination, and resourcefulness of Nigerian youth, tempered with age and wisdom and driven by the hope for a brighter future!
Upright Nigeria Foundation for Charity and Development was officially incorporated through the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
